Mighty Nextgen Or Stupid Furry Cartoon? Ratchet & Clank Review: Rift Apart

A little over six months have passed since the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales , and Insomniac Games is already preparing to release a new system seller for PS5 on F95zone . Many could forget, but earlier the Californian studio was known not for blockbusters about Spider-Man, but for a series of action-platformers about cartoon characters of the galaxy. Having shot at one time on the PlayStation 2 , Ratchet and Clank played on the PlayStation 3 : numerous issues interested only the most loyal fans.

The series, which began in 2002, has already 14 parts (not counting the re-releases and remake), and the last full-fledged release was in the summer of 2013. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart  cleverly fits into the timeline, continuing the story interrupted eight years ago, but at the same time remaining accessible to those who only met the heroes in the restart.

The game begins with a celebration celebrating the exploits of Ratchet and Clank. It takes place a few years after Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus , and, accordingly, many years after Ratchet & Clank (2016) , where the heroes met. Being on a well-deserved rest, Ratchet has softened and no longer even wants to look for his disappeared relatives of the Lombax in other dimensions. But Clank still gives him the Measurement – a gadget destroyed in the previous part that opens portals between worlds.

The idyll is spoiled by the villain Doctor Nefarius – he takes away a valuable device and goes to a dimension where Ratchet and Clank are nobody, and the Doctor himself became the emperor and rules the galaxy with an iron hand. In the course of this, the Measurement manages to explode, damaging the connections between the worlds: uncontrolled portals to other dimensions began to appear everywhere, and Ratchet and Clank were stuck in an alternative universe with no way to get out. In addition, they managed to get lost, and Clank was stolen by a certain Lombax, surprisingly similar to Ratchet …

Alternative versions of characters from a parallel universe have become one of the features of the new game. Fans will be interested in taking a look at the changes in familiar characters, although this topic begins to work to its fullest only towards the end. This can be said about the entire Rift Apart  – it has a crumpled beginning and a sagging middle. After a chaotic introduction, the player is slowly taken to several planets and introduced to a couple of characters, but no special events occur. The plot does not shine with shocking twists and second bottom – this is not at all the case when the creators made it interesting for both children and adults, as it was in animated series like Gravity Falls or Adventure Time .

Even before the release, the developers nevertheless admitted that the white Lombax Rivet is a female version of Ratchet from another dimension like HuniePop 2. Unlike the softened savior of the galaxy, she survived without her Clank and is always forced to cope on her own, and therefore has a staunch, Nordic character. However, in the gameplay there is no difference between them: Ratchet and Rivet have the same abilities, total pumping, resources and progression. This is explained in the game … It is not explained in any way, but you won’t get confused. On half of the planets, they are allowed to play for one character, on the other – for the second, and you cannot switch them on your own.

Ratchet & Clank have always been platformers at their core, and Ratchet and Rivet have a corresponding set of capabilities: jump (including double) and the ability to slowly plan, dodge, shoot, melee and rocket boots for fast movement (not in the series since 2013 th). Acrobatics is simple, but pleasant – occasionally there is running on the walls, there is an opportunity to pull up on the energy lasso to gaps in space and special points. In fact, there are only a few scenes in the game in which you will have to do acrobatics and platforming at the level of Prince of Persia, the rest of the time you can explore the locations quite imposingly.

In addition to alternative versions of the characters, the game was promoted with a mention of rifts between worlds. This is the tool that was intended to demonstrate the full power of the new SSD. There are portals that are needed to quickly move around the arena during the battle. Functionally, they do not differ from the beams to which the energy lasso can be drawn, but the sensations from moving are completely different. The developers said that for breaks, two scenes are rendered simultaneously, and at the time of movement they are superimposed on one another. In principle, this is the most significant feature of the game: thanks to the chips and the power of the Japanese console of the new generation, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart  allows you to feel familiar things a little differently.

Conclusion:

Ratchet & Clank: “Through the Worlds” (the official Russian name) would have been just another good platformerfrom Sony  at a discounted price from the start ( Ratchet & Clank in 2016 cost $ 40 at release), but it so happened that the game had the honor to show everyone “Real nextgen”. The line in graphics between generations has blurred, but don’t be fooled: it is still huge, especially considering that the new product works in 4K in all modes (at the start there will be an option with 60 fps). Players who are not interested in the series will have a particularly hard time. Yes, this is a cutting edge product with the best graphics at the moment and one of the few real nextgen projects. But this is also a short platformer for five and a half thousand rubles.
